Vegetarian Hanky Panky Appetizer Recipe

Holiday season is upon us, and it’s time to bust out the beloved classics like Hanky Panky Appetizer. But what if you’re hosting a party with lots of vegetarian guests, or you kid came back from college wanting to eat more vegetarian meals, or you’re just trying to cut back on meat in general. Leave nobody out with this budget friendly, vegetarian version of Hanky Panky apps.

Ingredients

Ingredients per Batch:

2 - 15 oz. Cans of lentils, rinsed and patted dry

4 oz. Olive oil

3 Tbsp. Onion, grated

¼ tsp Cayenne powder

1 tsp Garlic powder

½ tsp Smoked paprika

1 tsp Oregano

1 Tbsp. Soy sauce

½ tsp chili powder

1 Container Cheeze Whiz (if using Velvetta instead, be sure to cub before adding)

1 Pack of S.Rosen’s Caraway or Pumpernickel cocktail bread

Directions

  1. Heat the 4 Tbsp. of olive oil in a large pan, when heated add the lentil and onion. Cook for 8-10 minutes.
  2. Before turning off the heat add the spices and soy sauce and stir well. Remove from heat and add the Cheez Whiz. Make sure it is fully blended in. Allow to cool.
  3. Arrange the S.Rosen’s cocktail rye bread on a baking sheet and then top each slice with a generous spoonful of the lentil mixture.
  4. Bake in the oven at 375 for 8-9 minutes, until the bread is toasted. Serve and enjoy!
